Antigone, the daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta, is a character who has a mind of her own, which is not accepted in a society which degrades women. Antigone compared to Ismene is stronger, perhaps physically, but importantly she is stronger in the sense that her thoughts and ideas are fully formed. She knows what she wants and sets out to go for it, whereas Ismene is the total opposite. Ismene represents the ideal, uncertain woman of the time period and Antigone is one in a million, she stands out, she’s rebellious and no matter what the consequences does what she believes is right and lets God make the final judgment of what she did was right or wrong, instead of the people of Thebes.
Antigone wants to give her brother, Polyneices, the proper respect and love he deserves by burying him in the grave instead of having birds and other animals eat him. She knows the consequences of this deed are dreadful but she does not fear what will happen to her because her good acts outweigh any punishment she might receive. In that way she is an admirable person, she has her mind set and deals with things head-on.
Antigone has a built personality that is unbendable. She expects the same from other people in order for them to have her respect, she doesn’t like the cowardly acts of her own sister but she does not force Ismene to side with her. She thinks the people of
